I've been living for more than 4 years in a collegium connected to Sankt Augustins Kirke in Copenhagen. The church and its surroundings were home to so much of my work - I've written almost all the music from those years there, organized many unforgettable concerts, played piano at night, performed at church events (including solo piano ambient wedding, that was truly something), invited Ichiko Aoba to play there for the first time together, had long conversations in the church's garden... honestly, so much of my life was connected to this beautiful and wonderfully sounding space.
It has a special sound and ambience that made me play different from anywhere else and this short album is a representation of this.
I feel there's some rawness to those improvisations - and for that reason I want to share those 23 minutes and invite to that spontaneous, unprepared flow. I recorded at night, it was rather late, I've been very tired after moving my things for the whole day. Playing was a form of saying goodbye to the church and a meditation.
I see those recordings as music of that very time and space. I hope they can bring at least a tiny piece of the warmth and calmness of Sankt Augustins Kirke in that time. Artwork by Paweł Rakowski SJ
